Villahermosa

Villahermosa is the capital city of Tabasco state. The main tourist attraction here is the Parque-Museo La Venta. This park features ruins from the Olmec city of La Venta, which existed about 1500-600 BC. These ruins are displayed in an ecological park meant to duplicate the ecosystem that existed in Tabasco at that time. I enjoyed this park very much because it combined some interesting ancient history with some good birdwatching. The La Venta park is connected to a string of parks along the riverfront, including a pretty good zoo.

The name Villahermosa means "beautiful city". Does it live up to its name? Honestly, I don't remember much about the place, other than the park mentioned above. I can't really recommend that anyone go there, nor can I think of a reason why they shouldn't. I remember the inhabitants were pretty friendly, but there just wasn't a lot to see there. It was a good place for me to stop on the long road between Oaxaca and the Yucatán. Also, it is very close to Palenque.
