Nuevo Laredo is in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, on the border with Texas. More foreign travelers cross the border into Mexico here than other place on the Texas border. To tell you the truth, I don't have a lot to say about Nuevo Laredo. I didn't spend much time there, and I didn't get to see much of the town. It has sentimental value for me simply because it was the place where I first entered into Mexico. After 18 hours on a Greyhound bus, I finally set foot on non-US soil for the first time, and I was hit with culture shock like a glass of cold water in the face. People will tell you "The border towns are very American. They're a good place to get your feet wet. Everyone speaks English, they all take the US dollar, and there are American tourists everywhere." That's not what I experienced. I must have been the blondest dude within fifty miles of that bus station, and what Spanish I had taught myself didn't do me much good with the locals. Nobody knew English, and for the most part I had to resort to makeshift sign language to get where I wanted to go. Anyway, the good thing about Nuevo Laredo is that it is only a three hour bus ride to Monterrey. Home | Art
