Canadian Art

Mexican Art

A note of explanation: I am not Canadian, although sometimes I wish I were. Canadian artists are not mentioned in American art schools, but they should be. Their landscape painters are incredible. While the American art scene gave up on representational painting several decades back in favor of abstract and found-object art, it seems the Canadians have been able to incorporate new art forms and new technologies into their culture, while keeping a firm grounding in nature, and not losing respect for traditional, representational art. (Just my opinion; I'm no expert.)

The following two sites are excellent resources for learning about Canadian art:

National Gallery of Canada (Cybermuse)
http://cybermuse.gallery.ca/cybermuse/detect.jsp

Virtual Museum of Canada
http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/English/index_noflash.html

The Group of Seven
Some information on Canada's most famous artists
http://www.tomthomson.org/groupseven/index.html

Walter J. Phillips
I'm also a big fan of Canada's printmakers. This excellent artist is primarily known for his color woodcuts
http://www.sharecom.ca/phillips/default2.html

Robert Davidson
The Native American art of the Northwest Coast (Pacific coast from Alaska down to Washington) also interests me very much. Robert Davidson is a good example of a contemporary artist working in this traditional style of imagery.
http://www.coghlanart.com/robert.htm
(Incidentally, for Midwesterners (like me), an excellent place to view this style of art and learn more about the Native cultures of the Northwest Coast is at the Field Museum in Chicago.)

Mexico has a lot of great art museums; unfortunately, most of them don't have web sites.

Diego Rivera Web Museum
Mexico's most famous artist, and, in my opinion, the best
http://www.diegorivera.com/index.html

Graphic Witness
http://www.graphicwitness.org/ineye/index2.htm
This site is devoted to "social commentary through graphic imagery", and covers primarily 20th-century art of all nations. I note it here primarily for the information it provides about Taller de Gráfica Popular, a cooperative workshop of Mexican printmakers, led by Leopoldo Méndez
http://www.graphicwitness.org/group/tgp.htm

Museum of Contemporary Art, Yucatan
This museum in Mérida, Yucatan, has in its permanent collection the work of two great abstract expressionist painters, Fernando García Ponce and Gabriel Ramírez
http://www.macay.org/html/indexi.html

Panorama: The North American Landscape in Art
An online exhibition of art comparing the landscape paintings of the United States, Canada, and Mexico
http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/Exhibitions/Landscapes/

Arte-Mexico
This site covers the art world in Mexico today. It features calendars of exhibitions and openings, links to web sites of galleries and artists (living and deceased), maps and more. Mostly in Spanish.

Chinese Art

Individual Artists and Movements

Having recently travelled to China, I have developed an interest in Chinese art, particularly modern art in the socialist-realist style. Here are a few good sites.

China: 5,000 Years
This is the web site of an art exhibition put on by the Guggenheim Museum. It features an excellent collection of images, ranging from traditional guohua (Chinese watercolor and ink paintings), oil paintings, calligraphy, and wood block prints. Many of the pieces on this site I saw in person at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.

Stefan Landsberger's Chinese Propoganda Poster Pages
Prof. Landsberger is a collector of these posters, and has written a few books on them. His web site is very educational, and contains a wealth of excellent images.
http://www.iisg.nl/~landsberger/

Asian Historical Architecture
Features maps and photo albums of China's architectural wonders.
http://www.orientalarchitecture.com/

Visual Sourcebook of Chinese Civilization
Includes info on painting, architecture, graphic arts, calligraphy, clothing, Buddhism, and more.

Note: These sites are not necessarily chosen because these are my favorite artists, but rather because they are good web sites, comprehensive in their scope and containing lots of images. Unfortunately, many great artists do not have great web sites devoted to their art. So all you art historians out there, get to work.

Online Picasso Project
The best site I've ever seen on ANY artist. It contains over 7,000 images of Picasso's work, categorized chronologically, and a detailed account of his life. Very impressive and very educational.
http://www.tamu.edu/mocl/picasso/

Bob Osborn's FUTURISM and the Futurists
An excellent in-depth site devoted to this early 20th-century European art movement
http://www.futurism.org.uk/futurism.htm

John Singer Sargent
One of America's all-time greats. This site is not designed so well, but it has a great collection of images.
http://www.jssgallery.org/

Rockwell Kent
Painter, author, illustrator, and activist
http://organizations.plattsburgh.edu/museum/kentkent.htm

Maynard Dixon
A great landscape painter of the American West
http://www.maynarddixon.com/

The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation
Features many photographs of his work
