Where the Wild Things Are

I painted this series of murals in my son's room (He's due in July). It is a collection of scenes showing animals in their natural habitats. I designed the murals using Macromedia Freehand software. This allowed me to construct the animals out of simple geometric shapes. After producing this 1/20 scale drawing of the room, I sketched the design on the walls with chalk, and then painted it with acrylics.

The murals cover just over 150 square feet of wall space, and contain a total of 27 animals. Designing and painting the murals took about 100 hours.

Antarctic Scene
The skinny wall inside the doorway shows two emperor penguins: a daddy and child (two views of the same scene below).

Arctic Scene
Across from the penguins there's a polar bear and a sea lion sitting on an ice flow sharing a fish.

Teton Scene
My wife and I spend time in Grand Teton National Park every summer, and someday our son will too. Here's a shot of the Tetons, with some common wildlife in the foreground: Great Blue Heron, Beaver, Moose, and Great Horned Owl.

Tree Scene
Sitting in this tree are seven birds commonly found in our backyard: Cardinal, House Sparrow, Black-Capped Chickadee, Robin, Red-Bellied Woodpacker, Blue Jay, and Tufted Titmouse.
Lion Scene
A lion and a giraffe, obviously.

Jungle Wall
This scene features nine animals from four different continents: toucan, white tiger, chameleon, orangutan, panda, koala, python, hornbill, and chimpanzee.
